Description

Child victims of human trafficking are far more prevalent than many people realize, particularly within the juvenile justice system. This training will provide participants with an understanding of the laws, dynamics, and impact of human trafficking on youth. It will focus on best practices for engaging and supporting survivors of human trafficking, including tools for identifying trafficking victims, understanding legal remedies available to survivors, and accessing related resources. Participants will gain practical strategies to more effectively serve and advocate for these vulnerable youth.

Trainers

Chelsea Gaffey – Human Trafficking Liaison, Department of Youth Services

Chelsea Gaffey is the Human Trafficking Liaison for the Department of Youth Services (DYS). She is a Licensed Social Worker with 13+ years of professional experience in the Anti-Human Trafficking field. Her work includes both domestic and international experience, as well as working in direct service, providing technical assistance, training, and advocacy work. As the Human Trafficking Liaison, Ms. Gaffey reviews human trafficking screening tools that are completed for youth coming through DYS, connects with any identified youth, and provides appropriate referrals. In addition to internal responsibilities, Ms. Gaffey works with Juvenile Courts across Ohio to provide trainings on human trafficking, sits on the Governor’s Human Trafficking Task Force, and the Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Initiative. As part of these initiatives, Ms. Gaffey is a member of subcommittees that inform statewide policies and protocols.

Vanessa Torres – Expert Consultant, Office of Criminal Justice Services

Vanessa Torres is an Expert Consultant for the Office of Criminal Justice Services.  She has previous experience working as a criminal justice professional for a local county court and the county prosecutor’s office. Ms. Perkins is an anti-trafficking subject matter expert who uses her knowledge, experience, and professional expertise to educate professionals and general audiences across the state.

Micayla Wilson – Child & Youth Anti Trafficking Specialist, Governor’s Human Trafficking Task Force – Office of Criminal Justice Services

Micayla Wilson is a subject matter expert that has 9 years of professional experience in the anti-trafficking field. Many of these years were spent in direct services with child and youth survivors of human trafficking and their support networks in both residential and community-based responses. Ms. Wilson also has experience in leading anti-trafficking programs, developing multi-disciplinary response networks, and building trauma responsive protocols. Ms. Wilson now serves on the Ohio Governor’s Human Trafficking Task Force as the Child & Youth Anti Trafficking Specialist. In this role she supports the Task Force’s child and youth initiatives such as improving the child welfare and juvenile justice responses to human trafficking and supporting victim services agencies in building out their anti-trafficking programs and response protocols.
