CASA volunteer recognized for 21 years of service to Greene County children in need

Greene County Board of Commissioners honor Jean Lockwood for 5,000+ hours of volunteer advocacy

Long-time Greene County CASA volunteer Jean Lockwood was honored by the Greene County Board of Commissioners Thursday for her efforts to advocate for children experiencing abuse and neglect.

Lockwood was sworn in as a CASA volunteer in 2003.

She has advocated for over 100 children, spent more than 5,000 hours volunteering with CASA and completed 600+ hours of training, according to the Greene County CASA program.

“This has been an experience that has been marvelous for me to see all these children and know I made a difference in at least a few lives,” said Lockwood. “This program is irreplaceable.”

Lockwood was presented with a resolution from the Commissioners as she plans to officially retire. CASA staff, court staff, Ohio CASA and community members all came together for the honor.

“It takes a very special person with very caring ideas and thoughts, and I congratulate you over and over,” said Commissioner Tom Koogler at the meeting. “You are one of the reasons Greene County is a great place to live.”

Greene County CASA Director Greta McKenzie also shared information about Lockwood’s legacy and impact in the community.

“She is a great asset to our program,” said McKenzie. “Over these 21 years, we can share many stories of the great advocacy she has given to the children of our community. She has provided many resources to families, along with supporting the children in their educational path. You will see her walking around with the 103 names of her CASA children hand embroidered on the back of her shirt.”

Lockwood has also worked to spread the word about CASA in the community, encouraging others to volunteer for children experiencing abuse and neglect.

After detailed training, a CASA volunteer is appointed by a judge to advocate for a child’s best interest. The volunteer talks with the child, family members, teachers and others to complete their report.

A CASA volunteer shares that crucial background information in a written report to assist the judge or magistrate in making the best decision for the child.

“We thank Jean for her dedicated advocacy for Ohio children who need it most,” said Ohio CASA Executive Director Doug Stephens. “She has helped and inspired many other volunteers from across the state. That is a testament to her commitment and kindness, and the quality of the Greene County CASA program.”

There are CASA volunteers advocating for children experiencing abuse and neglect in 60 Ohio counties.
