Montgomery County Juvenile Court CASA program swears in large volunteer class, honors CASA volunteers at special gala

Ohio CASA, Judges, and community supporters gather for CASA Awards banquet

The Montgomery County Juvenile Court (MCJC) CASA program honored volunteers and swore-in a large class of new volunteers at a special awards ceremony Wednesday.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers were joined by loved ones, community supporters, court staff and Ohio CASA leaders.

“This was a special night bringing together new CASA volunteers and long-term advocates from across our community. We appreciate the support of all our partners to make this happen,” said CASA Program Manager Al Minor.

Judge Helen Wallace swore-in a large group of CASA volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who recently completed comprehensive training.

Volunteer and former Ohio CASA board member Rick Smith was honored with the Rylee Sellars Award.

CASA volunteers are community members who, after completing training, advocate for children experiencing abuse and neglect. A volunteer shares detailed information and best interest recommendations to assist judges and magistrates in making decisions about a child’s future.

Judge Julie Bruns and Court Administrator Eric Shafer also welcomed the group, thanking both new and long-standing CASA volunteers for their commitment.

Community Impact Director Andrina Ryhlick told the crowd that she began her journey with CASA as a volunteer in another state. She and the MCJC CASA team are now on a mission to have a highly trained CASA volunteer available for every child in Montgomery County experiencing abuse or neglect.

“This has been such an emotional journey and special moment for our program,” said Ryhlick. “I appreciate the dedication of these volunteers and encourage our community to get involved. Share the word about CASA volunteer work with your network.”

“It was an honor to take part in this event and have the opportunity to meet so many dedicated CASA volunteers and court staff members,” said Stephens. “We are encouraged to see this long-standing CASA program expand to serve even more children in need.”

Another volunteer was honored with the Rylee Sellars Award, on behalf of a partnership with a local family.

Montgomery County has operated a CASA program since 1988, one of the first CASA programs in Ohio.
