Local programs, Ohio CASA raising awareness for children in need during Child Abuse Prevention Month this April
The Ohio CASA/GAL Association and local CASA programs statewide are working to raise awareness about the fight to keep Ohio children safe from harm during Child Abuse Prevention Month.
CASA volunteers and staff members are taking part in various events and efforts throughout the April awareness month.
“This push is at the heart of The Ohio CASA Network’s mission,” said Ohio CASA Executive Director Doug Stephens. “We believe every Ohio child experiencing abuse and neglect should have access to a highly trained community member who can advocate for their best interest in court.”
Child Abuse Prevention Month highlights the importance of families and communities working together to fight child abuse.
Many CASA programs will wear blue throughout April to show support for Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Some programs will place blue pinwheels in prominent areas across their communities to raise awareness. For example, Preble County CASA volunteers and staff teamed up with judicial staff to “plant” a blue pinwheel garden in the Preble County Courthouse lawn.

Others will host events or share information and resources on multiple platforms about preventing child abuse.
“CASA volunteers and programs step up not just every April during Child Abuse Prevention Month, but year-round. If you are looking to make a positive impact in the life of an Ohio child, I would encourage you to contact your local CASA program,” said Stephens.
After undergoing a background check and comprehensive training, CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge to advocate for children in abuse or neglect cases. Volunteers are community members from all walks of life.
There is a need across the state for more caring, dedicated adults to become CASA volunteers.
Volunteers complete at least 30 hours of training and in-court observation before being assigned a case. CASA volunteers get continued support and complete annual training.
There are 48 CASA programs serving more than 9,000 children in 62 Ohio counties annually.
