Program directors, staff and Ohio CASA gather for annual training, discussion
CASA program directors, volunteer coordinators and Ohio CASA staff members gathered in Columbus in mid-December for Ohio CASA’s annual “Technical Assistance Meeting.”
Directors and program staff from across Ohio attended the two-day meeting to discuss best practices, complete training and strengthen connections.
“We were glad to connect with so many CASA program directors and staff members, both long-term and new to CASA work, at this two-day training,” said Ohio CASA Executive Director Doug Stephens. “I thought the group discussions were valuable. It is helpful for our staff to get updates from program directors in-person as well.”
There were training presentations from various experts, including Crystal Ann Hall about implicit bias in the child welfare field, and Andrew Wachter regarding the Quality Improvement Center on Engaging Youth in Finding Permanency (QIC-EY) program. The program is focused on advancing child welfare programs and practice, with support from the National Center for Juvenile Justice of the the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

Ohio CASA staff also shared updates on their efforts on behalf of the Ohio CASA Network and information on best communications practices, including Director of Communications Haley Nelson.
The Ohio CASA Network discussed the latest child welfare trends in Ohio, how to best serve children experiencing abuse and neglect, and how to show appreciation for the 2,500+ CASA volunteers statewide.
“It is wonderful to get the opportunity to meet with so many CASA program directors from across Ohio,” said PARACHUTE Butler County CASA Executive Director Tonya Buchanan, who serves on the Ohio CASA Board of Directors. “Coming together as a network is important for new and more veteran CASA staff as we talk about how to best serve Ohio children in need.”
The Technical Assistance Meeting is one many training sessions for CASA staff and volunteers put on throughout the year.
